I have recently purchased what I believe to be a 1946 Old Town CS grade canoe, Serial Number 145788.
I am planning to restore it to its original condition and need any information to help me in this effort.
Thanks in advance for your help
Best Regards,
Bob Musso

The Old Town canoe with serial number 145788 is a 16 foot long, CS grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash trim, a keel, a floor rack, and a full length bang plate. It was built between June and September, 1946. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on September 23rd, 1946 to Southbridge, Massachusetts.

Scans of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below. This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve this information is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

There is a lot of good restoration information right here in these forums. The books at http://virtualbooks.wcha.org/#wc in the WCHA's Virtual Bookstore may also be helpful. Replacement parts are still available from Old Town and many of the restorers listed at http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/ if you are looking for a local resource.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with your restoration,

Benson

Bang plate...

What is a "full length bang plate"? Location, material, photo's, etc. Never heard of this one before... Thanks, Joe

A "full length bang plate" is a brass stem band that extends from stem tip to stem tip protecting the full length of the keel. They are identified in the diagram at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specific.gif from the specifications page. Let me know if this is not clear and I can add a picture.

Re: Bang plate...

Thanks Benson, just another name I was not familiar with... I guess this comes into play when there is a keel present as opposed to just a half round brass strip on the bow and stern...
