I just picked up an old wood and canvas canoe and would like to identify it.
According to the previous owner it was originally purchased in 1949 and was owned by the same family, if not possessed by them, for it's entire life so far (it's complicated).

It's not in prime shape, but I think it is recoverable. I'm pretty sure it's never been refurbished, but it has been painted at least once.

    Length 16'
    Beam 32 1/2" @ outwale, 34 1/2" @ widest
    Depth 12" inside, 13" outside
Stamped on stern stem: 7901 16PLEA
    42 ribs 2 1/8" wide, 3/8" thick, 2 1/4" spacing

Brass stem bands are secured with brass slotted screws
Outwales and decks secured with rusted Phillips head screws
"Chestnut" decal is at bow on both sides not amidships
There is a very faint trace of Chestnut decal on bow deck

My guess would be a Chestnut based on the decals. There are no known detailed serial number records for Chestnut so there isn't much else that anyone here can tell you. See https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/16336/ for some discussion of a canoe with similar decals. Good luck with the restoration,

    Benson

Is Mike asking as a member or an interloper?
Come on Fretwell -pay up your membership dues!

BTW this is the same canoe I posted last week asking about "Chestnut" script on the bow.

    Fact check Pook!

I paid for WCHA membership before I joined the forum and started asking questions. I have the receipt to prove it.
