Grandpa's Old Town Canoe

I have been storing my grandfather's Old Town since his passing. I have always thought I would someday be in a place where it could be put back to use - fishing. My connection is now 100% sentimental, but I feel like this beauty should be someplace other than my garage or storage unit. I guess I am beginning the process of selling, but I would like to start with valid identification.
Thanks so much to anyone who can help me start out on the right foot

Welcome, the Old Town with serial number 175785 is a 15 foot long square end canoe with bow and stern seats only (i.e. no middle seat), half ribs, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, sponsons, and a bang plate along the full length of the keel. It was built between March and April, 1966. The original exterior paint color was dark green with design number 4 stars on the right and left sides of the bow. See http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design04.gif for an example of the design number 4 with star. It shipped on April 6th, 1966 to Waverly, Iowa. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The information at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/57/ may help although these were written for canoes with two pointed ends. Canoes with a transom often sell for less. The classifieds at http://www.wcha.org/classifieds are usually one of the fastest ways to find a good new home for a canoe like this. Please attach a picture if the original design is still showing. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Benson

Thank you SO much for your help. That was my grandpa in Allison, IA (ran the local creamery) - Waverly was the closest "big town" in the area. I didn't realize when the canoe was made/purchased. I was not yet one year old, but that was the canoe where I learned to fish 5-6 years later. Fantastic information!
Thanks again

Rob
