Found in the UK help needed to ID year and maker

Wide board and batten construction (which you seem to be describing) canoes most often were built of basswood, and often painted. Basswood is very prone to rot, especially if painted rather than varnishd, thus not many of them survive, unless very well cared for and properly stored. Some were built of cedar, so more rot resistant.
