Closed gunwale OT with mahogany capped..

Michigan Canoe Nut
Anyone ever seen an OT sponson canoe with closed gunwales and mahogany caps on the sponsons? Photos please!!

The one from your other thread at https://adirondack.pastperfectonline.com/webobject/C393E280-CAB1-4CCA-A7D8-465104739023 shipped with closed double mahogany gunwales but appears to have been converted to open gunwales at some point. The build record is attached below. The one at https://www.vintagecanoeworks.com/restored/15ot_hw15.html has closed gunwales and sponsons (without the mahogany caps). Good luck,

Benson

Anyone know if other species of wood was used for the cap? Picking one up tomorrow and will post some pics.

Anyone know if other species of wood was used for the cap?

Other woods would have been used on a non-AA grade canoe. If you are getting the one with serial number 1852 then there is no build record available to confirm the grade (or anything else). The pictures posted on Facebook indicate that it is probably a CS grade. I look forward to seeing more pictures. Thanks,

Benson

Todd,
I'm the one who spotted the canoe and sent it to Chris who passed it to you. Glad that you saved it.
Hoping you post pictures here or in another thread.

Russ, many thanks! Asked Chris to pass my appreciation. Started a new thread to see what we can figure out. The seller got it from his father who acquired it in the Adirondacks.

So were those canvased and painted yellow? I hope and assume they were not wood capped and painted!?

I also notice the solid carry thwarts that match the canoe Chris P shared with me but the recent 16 ft assumed OT with sponsons did not have carry thwarts, even though it weighs alot. Will see what it weighs tomorrow.
