It is known that many of the early canoe builders did a variety of different things so I was curious how some of them had answered the census taker's questions about their occupation. It was surprising to learn that Evan Gerrish described himself as a "Fish Rod Maker" in 1880, a "Canoe Builder" in 1900, a "farmer" working on a "farm" in 1910 and a "Builder" of "Canoes" in 1920. Guy Carleton was a "Batteau Maker" in 1880 and a "Canoe Manufacturer" in 1900 which is less of a surprise. The details are shown below.
