Build sheet request for OT #154488

Wow - that's super cool to look at what which more popular and which less. And clearly some were never ordered. Thanks Benson!

And clearly some were never ordered.

I suspect that every design was made at least once. These estimates are based on a sample of 14,276 records which is only a few percent of the total. I simply stopped calculating an estimate when the sample size got so small that the accuracy became highly questionable. Old Town canoes are still being made today so anyone could request one of these old designs now.

Got it. I want one of each!:) I love the deco posters including these designs.

Do you happen to know whether they had stencils and sprayed the patterns, or laid them out and brushed them? Somewhat labor-intensive either way...

These were done by hand in most cases. The poster that they worked from is shown at https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/15800/ for example. They did have a collection of cardboard triangle templates for the design number four that were sized to match the different gunwale lengths on each model of canoe. See https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/6444/#post-34443 for more details about this.

Thanks. Helpful for me thinking about what it would take to do one of these.

You may also enjoy the Wooden Canoe issue number 128 with an article by Al Sienkiewicz about painting the design number seven. This is very complex as shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design07.gif and below. Issue number 117 has an analysis of the design number four. Paper versions of these magazines are available from http://www.wcha.org/store/back-issues or you can get the full set as scans.

The popularity of white shows how boats were becoming a significant part of the product mix during that time.
