Bee repellant?

In Memoriam
Where I live in Maryland we have the fat burrowing bees that will put a big hole into wood in no time at all. They've eaten into the treated wood decking on my porch, last spring I saw one put a hole into the handle of a spade, and there was a hole that sure looked like it was made by a bee in one of my canoes pre-restoration. Several of my wooden canoes are in a carport, open to bees and other critters. Spring is not far away and the bees will soon become very active. I'm thinking about hanging mothballs around the canoes as a repellent, to protect gunwales and decks, but I do not know if it will do any good. If anyone knows of a really good bee repellent, please post. Tom McCloud
