A student in need...

Hi, my name is Ethan Wilson and I am a student at Greenville Tech Charter High School. For my Sr. Project, I elected to restore a canoe that my Dad bought at an auction last year. The catch is, I don't know anything about canoes; however that's the whole point of Sr Project, to learn something new. This canoe is branded twice near the bow with the letters LPS. I could not find a serial number. Any help? P.S. anyone know how to scale down images?

My guess would be an Arrowhead Meraco Speedster as shown in the 1925 St. Louis Meramec catalog below. The price list in the second image shows that you probably have the $150 mahogany finish model with half ribs. More information about this and other models can be found in the Meramec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CD available from http://merchandise.wcha.org/index.php?cPath=90_91 and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web. The LPS brands may be a previous owners initials.

The message at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=780 has some information about scaling images for printing. The Windows XP Paint tool also has an Image | Stretch/Skew function that can do this.

Good luck with the rest of your project.

Benson

You made my day...

Just wanted to say that you made my day-- it's so nice to know you are involved in such an interesting and worthwhile project. And I must add that the look on your goat's face is priceless! Thanks, and best of luck. There are many here who can help you with questions as you are working, and please let us know how it all comes out!

Thank you for the help, but I'm not sure that that's the right one. The frount end looks different. I'll post more pictures ASAP.

Sorry for the delay...

As you can see, the front end on the speedster is much more round. The rotted piece of wood is the keel. I think that I will definitly have to replace it, however I have no idea where to start. There seem to be no canoe experts near me. Draw your own conclusions, but I think that it is not a speedster. How do you downsize images?
