Hello everyone , I am new here. Found a supposedly 1971 Old Town Trapper on Craigslist . Was wondering if there is any information on serial number 188928. It has either had the canvas removed or maybe possibly it came this way . Thanks !

Welcome, the Old Town with serial number 188928 is a 15 foot long Trapper model with rub rails and a keel. It was built in April, 1972. The original fiberglass exterior was clear to show the natural wood. It shipped on May 3rd, 1972 to Champaign, Illinois. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. See https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/15684/ for a similar one. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson,

Thank you for the welcome ! Also thank you so much for the information. All of this makes sense . This is the correct canoe . I purchased it in Champaign County Illinois . So it has spent its whole life here. It seems to be in fairly decent shape . I did not know Old Town made a canoe with a clear finish like this .
