18' HW Sailor

#61580 is a 18' HW AA set up a s a sailor that I recently acquired. It came from a very old family camp in New Hampshire via Craig's list. Can you help me with the build information? This an exciting rebuild for me because it is the first boat that has come to me in all original (but rough) condition. No fiberglass, no early attempts to make repairs...... Lots to work with. Thanks!

Congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 61580 is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, a floor rack, sponsons, mast seat, mast step, complete rudder, polished brass rowlocks, brass bang plate along the full length of the keel, and a brass painter ring. It was built between February and August, 1921. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on August 19th, 1921 to Center Harbor, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Benson! The former owner will be happy to fill in a couple of blanks in the family's history of the canoe...
