#17674 16 foot

Hi Brent,

Old Town 17674 is a 17 foot CS (common sense, or middle-grade) Charles River model canoe, finished April and May of 1911. It has red Western cedar planking. Gunwales are closed and constructed of spruce. The deck is birch and is the small deck typical of Old Towns of that period (see www.dragonflycanoe.com/id/ and scroll down to Old Town on the left). Thwarts are ash and seat frames may be ash as well (record doesn't specify). The canoe was fitted with a keel and painted dark red, then shipped to Williamsport, PA on May 22, 1911.

If you're new to old/antique canoes (mentioned in your other post), read through the information on Old Towns on the dragonfly.com site. Several makers used a serial number system similar to Old Town's, and if you're unsure about the maker of your canoe, please post a picture. The fact that your canoe is 16 feet and the record is for a 17 footer makes me suspicious that there's a missing digit or your canoe is by a different maker. OT put serial numbers on both stems... check both and compare.

Posting a picture is a good idea anyway... we LOVE looking at canoe pictures! If you have trouble uploading pictures, there's information on uploading here:

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

More information on the Old Town Company can be found in Sue Audette's book, "Old Town, Our First Hundred Years", which is available through the WCHA store and most booksellers, eBay, Amazon, and public libraries.
