Curious about Wooden Canoes
just looking for info on above re canoe. it is an oldtown.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 16837 is a 17 foot long, CS grade, Otca model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between January and June, 1911. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 29th, 1911 to Pocono Lake, Penna. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Thank you Mr. Gray for the info on my canoe. Im still a bit unclear however. My canoe is dark green, has sponsons, is 17', but has an old town sticker on the front deck. Im not sure what species the compoints are. I have'nt started to disassemble and determine that as yet. The old town build slip does not indicate sponsons?

An Old Town name plate and sponsons means that you probably need to take a very close look at the serial numbers on each stem again. The information and tips at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=791 may help. My guess is that you have a hidden digit so the serial number may really be 116837 as shown in the build record below, especially if your canoe also has a floor rack and outside stems.
It is also possible that you have another number or the Carleton canoe which just had an Old Town decal put on it although this was usually noted on the build record. Please reply here if you find another number or have more questions.
