Can anyone help ID the year this Kennebec Canoe was made? Serial Number is 103173. We received it as part of an estate and it will be going up on an online auction next week. Thanks in advance

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 103173 as shown on pages 282 and 283 of volume five in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to a 17 foot long Camp Chief Special model. It was planked by Mansell on December 19th, 1931. The canvas covering and the first filler coat were applied by Thibodeau on January 2nd, 1932. The second filler coat was applied by Giroux on July 30th, 1931 (which is probably a typographical error). It was railed by Mansell on July 28th, 1932. The "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?) was completed by Thibodeau on the same day. The "F 24" and "F 28" (Function numbers 24 to 28 or the finish work) were completed by Thib. on June 4th, 1932. The original color was green. It was packed by Terry on August 1st, 1932 and shipped to location "32-374" on the same day. It appears to have been returned and reshipped to location 33-65 on May 8th, 1933. These locations are probably order numbers but we don't currently have enough information to identify it.

The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CDs available from http://www.wcha.org/store/historic-wood-canoe-and-boat-company-catalog-collection in the WCHA store.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
