147418 16

The Old Town canoe with serial number 147418 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with white Maine cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, half ribs, a keel, outside stems, and sponsons. It was built between January and March, 1947. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It shipped on May 10th, 1947 to Dayton, Ohio. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The canoe described at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?9301 was very similar. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Wow...what a difference a few decades can make. We just obtained this canoe from a fellow who lived outside of Dayton. It is no longer 16' in length however, nor does it have sponsons. When this gentleman obtained it, it had been poorly cared for and a great deal of rot had set in. It is now a very nice solo canoe measuring about 12' in length. I will post up some photos soon.

Thanks Benson for the speedy reply.

This was fun to see. I know the seller real well, glad to see at least one of his boats going to a good home, or did you buy the others in the picture as well? Jim really liked his canoes sky blue!

We got the old town and the Thompson Hiawatha. We enjoyed meeting Jim and wish him the best in his travels.
