I was told it is a 1910 Old Town. Did they have closed gunwales and flat rectangular head bolts then? Also it has a sailing rig, can you tell if that was original? Thanks

The Old Town with serial number 14051 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Charles River model with Western red cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, closed mahogany double gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany trim, and a keel. It was built between April and May, 1910. The original exterior paint color was white. It shipped on May 27th, 1910 to Cranford, New Jersey. A scanned copy of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. The messages and pictures at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=3823 show other Old Towns with gunwales like this. The bolts were usually countersunk and plugged so I do not know if the tops were rectangular. It does not appear to have had a sailing rig fitted when it left the factory. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Craig,
Can you post some pics of gunwales and keel. We are finishing a double gunnel, and particularly interested in condition of gunnels/rib tips, and specs on the keel.

sure, I don't have the boat yet but I'll try to get some photos Saturday and see if I can figure out how to post them.

1910 O/T keel

I think it is interesting that my keel looks about the same as yours, it is about 1 3/4" wide and 1/2" tall and the last 20" taper to 0 in height and the width of the stem band in width. I am having no luck posting photos but will see if I can get some help this evening.
