The Old Town canoe with serial number 4631 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade Charles River model with maple decks, maple thwarts, maple seats, closed spruce gunwales, the bow seat dropped, a cane(?) chair, and six spruce paddles (two five feet long, two five feet three inches long, and two five feet six inches long). It was built between April and May, 1906. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It shipped on May 4th, 1906 to Binghamton, New York. The back of the record indicates that there were previous requests for copies of this build record in July, 1973 from Grand Rapids, Michigan and in April, 1974 from Plymouth, Connecticut. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.
These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. That's it. Thanks Benson. The canoe is in very good condition for its age. It will likely get one backside rib repair, a small amount of planking, end work, and new outwales and caps.
It would be great to see some pictures if you can share any. Are the bow seat drops spirals like the one shown at https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?attachments/29353/ on some of the others from this era? Do the rails extend past the stems? Am I asking too many questions?

The canoe has had some work done on it over the years, but it does not appear as though the rails ever extended beyond the stems. The seat spacers are not spiraled, and appear to be original. The planking is white cedar, 3" wide, and has lots of knot holes behind the ribs. The tacks are canoe tacks. I'll try to get some pics later. There is not a lot of upsweep in the ends.

A lack of upsweep in the ends probably does indicate a modification. See https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/12320/ for an idea of how it may have looked originally. I agree that the rails probably didn't extend past the stems on since the "Tips" line on the build record is blank. Thanks,
