Old Town 176928 15

Greetings,

My family has the listed SN 176928-15 canoe that has been stored in a shed since I've been alive. It needs some work that I am hoping to start in the next year or so. It was a gift to my grandfather after an unfortunate incident to his previous Old Town. This one was purchased for my grandfather in the mid 60s and he was quite surprised to find it in the middle of their living room Christmas morning. I really hope to get it back in good shape with a good refinishing and re-canvassing. This forum appears to be an excellent resource for this project. Any help with the build record is greatly appreciated!

Hey Daniel,

I'm sure someone will have that information for you shortly. I just wanted to let you know that there is a chapter near you. The Kentucky Tennessee chapter was newly formed. We are going to be at Henry Horton State park in Tennessee (not to far from you) on March 21st to promote WCHA. We will have 10 or so canoes there is every stage of repair. You are welcome to come by and talk to us about them and even bring your canoe. Check out the details on the EVENT page. Good luck with your project.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 176928 is a 15 foot long light weight model with a keel. It was built between October and November, 1966. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on December 5th, 1966 to Guntersville, Alabama. This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Thank you so much! Is it possible that you can explain something to me in regards to the "Grade"? I see that the grade is blank on this particular record but I have seen it listed on plenty others. Did these models not have particular grades? I'm assuming this one is a CS grade because I think the thwart is ash. I'll have to check that again next time I'm over there. Any other obvious signs to be on the lookout for?

The grades were eliminated about ten years before your canoe was made. See http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/15564/ for more details. The page at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specifications.jpg shows the specifications from the era when your canoe was made. Ash thwarts were common during this time.
