Birchbark Highway Portage Challenge - What is the Birch Bark Portage Challenge? In the good old days around 17 & 1600 the Indigenous, military, surveyor's and missionary’s from the south, Fort York, Lake Simcoe etc came north via Severn River, Muldrew’s Lakes and portage into Lake Muskoka and we believe that the north end of that portage came out in about the Discovery Centre where we set in our canoes. The portage became so heavily used the settlers called it the “Birch Bark Highway” We will be walking the last 100 feet?? of it, around a Hotel!
