Haliburton Canoe Company
Ben Carnochan of the Haliburton Canoe Company has been restoring wooden canoes full time since 2012. He has had a love for the outdoors and paddling since he built his first cedar-strip canoe while in high school. Then while in his first years at college he decided to build two cedar-strip coffee tables from scratch, one of which a local cottager immediately bought. In the autumn of 2009, Ben acquired a fifteen-foot canvas-covered canoe, which he subsequently repaired and used on a French River canoe trip in 2010. Since then Ben has repaired various canoes and in the autumn of 2012 decided to expand from a part-time to a full-time business. With Ben’s artistic skills and an eye for detail, he is dedicated to building new and restoring old wooden canoes back to their original beauty. He repairs all types of wooden canoes and also wood trim repairs to composite canoes. Just recently he has built a wood canvas canoe form and can now offer 15’ and 16’ models based on the 16’ Peterborough Champlain. With each canoe that leaves Ben’s shop, whether it’s a new one or a restoration, be assured each canoes has received the utmost care and attention to detail. Ben is also a member of the Wooden Canoe Builder’s Guild. Nestled in the beautiful Haliburton Highlands, our shop is located at Kennisis Lake about a 30 minute drive north of the Village of Haliburton.
